“Tempest in a Soda Bottle”

Politicians seek to raise funds for health care by proposing a tax on sugary drinks. Coca-Cola is pissed.

While the laissez-faire proponents of our century have decades of rhetoric to rely on, so do the men who succeeded in taxing cigarettes. Clear-cut evidence linking fountain sodas to various health issues such as obesity puts soft drink conglomerates on the chopping block, and it’s probably about time. New business models emphasizing conscientious capitalism are taking hold, and this is just one more step on the journey.

How can companies like McDonald’s, which now has delivery service available at some restaurants, contend they are not just as dangerous to public health as tobacco, considering that heart disease is the number one cause of death in our nation?
